Fresh Fruit, Vegetables, and Other Errands

Today was the morning of errands and near misses!

It was all timed so perfectly that I made a small circle, then a loop in one area of town before coming home, which is when the thunderstorms started a short time later.  Our city is set up so that homes, schools, and churches are basically located in certain areas with stores and other businesses located in one strip of town and the Town Center.  It works out nicely when all the errands are located in the same area!  All of the places I needed to go to today were within 5 minutes or less driving time from each other (about 10-15 minutes to get to the first location).

This is how my morning went:

Drove to CVS to pick up prescription refill for hubby.  Not much happened to this point except I noticed someone left their keys on the pharmacy counter and they had to call over the intercom for her to come get them.

As we were heading for our next destination, a stupid woman (YES, I’m calling her stupid!) almost made us crash into her!  Our light was green and she drove right in front of us to go down a street that was one-way in the other direction!  Luckily, for all of us, I was able to stop and maneuver around her and there were no other cars around me at the time that could have slammed into me from behind when I had to stop.  She quickly realized her mistake because there were cars blocking her waiting for their light to turn green so she turned around in front of them and turned behind me.

This wasn’t some small road where it’s not easy to see the other roads either.  We’re talking four lanes with a fairly large median and turn lanes on the streets we came from with the street she was turning onto being three lanes!  All clearly marked! She had plenty of time to realize she was making a mistake and correct it, but didn’t seem to until she got to the cars blocking her way!

Yikes!

After that incident, where my youngest son pointed out I said “Cripes All Mighty” and my oldest thinking that was weird, we headed to Goodwill.  I dropped off four more boxes of stuff!  I dropped off three boxes earlier in the week.  I’m going to clear out that garage even if it takes me several more trips to Goodwill!

A quick trip to the dentist was next.  My 8-year-old had to get a separator put in between two of his teeth to get ready to have a spacer attached on Monday.  Oh joy! He did really well with the appointment.  I’m hoping the whole experience won’t be too bad for him.  After the spacer is done stretching everything out, then he’ll be getting braces on his top teeth only to fix a gap and underbite/overbite issues.  Unfortunately, he’ll need braces again when he’s a teenager to finish straightening his teeth.

Two minutes later we were at the post office to mail off a book I sold on Half.com.  The person working there was hilarious, joking around with all the customers.  He asked about the boys’ schools and we found out he’s the father of one of the teachers at the elementary school.

It was finally lunch time! A little early (about 11:15 am), but we didn’t have time this morning to eat breakfast plus we missed the lunch rush!  We stopped by Wendy’s and just relaxed for a bit.

The last stop was at Publix to pick up some fruit, vegetables, milk, eggs, and some good buy one, get one free deals.  I’m still not doing a full grocery shopping, but as mentioned in this post, I’ll be picking up fresh items and deals too good to pass up as needed.  I’m trying to eat more fruits and vegetables by having healthier foods on hand to snack on.  So I picked up some Georgia peaches, a few black plums, cherries, grapes, potatoes, lettuce, and pre-cut/peeled carrots.  YUM!

The cherry tomatoes are from my patio container garden.

Carrots, lettuce, cherries, and grapes!  The juice is gone…my youngest finished it off after this picture was taken.

The rain started about 40 minutes after we got home right after I got the mail from the mailbox.  Good timing!

Grocery Deals

Looks like I’ll be heading to Publix again for some of this week’s deals.  They have a bunch of pantry staples that we use often.

  • Capri Sun Drinks are $1.79 a box.  I’m going to pick up four of them.
  • Mueller’s Pasta is Buy 1 Get 1 Free.  We’re still swimming in pasta, but we eat A LOT!  I’ll be picking up another four boxes.
  • Prego 100% Natural Italian Sauce is Buy 1 Get 1 Free.  Same as the pasta!
  • Swanson Broth is 2 for $4.00.  I’ll pick up four of them, too.
  • Hunt’s Tomato Ketchup is Buy 1 Get 1 Free.  I only need two of those.
  • Publix Whole Chicken is 99¢ lb.  I’ll pick up two of them!

Publix had more good deals as usual, but they really weren’t what we continuously use or need right now.

What deals are you picking up this week?

Meal Plans–Weeks of April 4th and 11th

I finally came up with my meal plan!  I was stuck for a little bit so I decided to go grocery shopping and see what was available.  Since we’ll be all split up for most of next week, I also decided to do that meal plan, too!

Grocery Shopping Deals!

I went grocery shopping today to pick up a few items from Publix that we use often and were a great price!  They were so good that I’m considering going again, but to a different Publix, to pick up some more!

My total was $67.30 and I saved $37.58!

My total would have been less, but I did buy a couple of extra items that were not on sale like bananas, sour cream, salad, milk, 4 cans of Publix cream of mushroom soup, and 2 cans of diced tomatoes.

Yoplait yogurt was 20/$9.00 or $0.45 each.

Stouffer’s family style meals were $3.99 each!  This is a huge deal worth stocking up on!  Normally they are $6.99 each.  There was a limit of four so I got 2 of the meatloaf and 2 of the chicken enchiladas.  I would love to get two more of each for that price!  Total savings on these was $11.44!

I bought 2 cantaloupes for $1.97 each.

Mueller’s pasta was buy one, get one free.  I bought 1 angel hair, 1 corkscrews, 2 bowties, 1 ziti, and 1 penne.  We go through A LOT of pasta so this would also be good to stock up on, though Publix does have pasta on sale frequently.  This came out to about $0.64 each.

Prego pasta sauce was also buy one, get one free.  It’s one of our favorites along with the Publix brand sauce (which I wouldn’t be surprised is the same as the Prego brand).  I bought 6 jars that cost us about $1.29 a jar.  Again we go through it a lot so it would be a good stock-up selection.  Publix does have pasta sauce on sale frequently, too, but it’s not always a brand we like.

V8 Fusion was buy one, get one free.  It’s the only time I’ll buy it because otherwise it’s too expensive.  $3.89 for a small bottle of juice…seriously!?!  I have two growing boys so it would never last.  But when one is free, it brings the price down to about $1.94 each and that is a much better price!

Sara Lee bread was $1.99 so I picked up two of them.  It’ll be gone in a week!

And finally, Lender’s bagels were buy one, get one free.  Got two bags for about $1.04 each.

For under $30.00 I could go to another store and buy the same quantities of the Stouffer’s family style meals, pasta, and pasta sauce.  Good thing I have room in my garage freezer, but I would need to find space in my pantry!

What good deals have you found lately?

I Saved So Much Money!

I went to the grocery store today and saved a bundle!  I spent a bundle, too, but I saved the most I’ve ever saved at the grocery store!

$105.23!

I can barely believe that I saved that much!

Out of that I actually got $67.04 worth of free food due to buy one, get one free deals.  I really love Publix’s BOGO Free deals!  Sometimes they don’t always have items I use, but this week there was a ton!

In addition, Kellogg’s cereal was 50% off just for this weekend!  I bought 5 boxes and in addition had 2 coupons: one for $1.00 and one for $0.70.  The total cost for the 5 boxes was $8.65 or 1.73 per box!

I saved $12.10 on the cereal!

Overall I spent $268.80, but saved $3.25 in coupons with the other $101.98 saved in free food and other sales.

What was your best shopping savings?

More Money!

Who doesn’t enjoy getting more money?  Especially since we don’t have a lot coming in right now due to my husband’s job loss!

Well we seem to be doing pretty good since he lost his job!  Even though we know it won’t last forever, but right now it’s nice!

We just received a refund check we were expecting from a procedure hubby had last year, which we paid for in advance thinking insurance wouldn’t cover it.

Turns out they put in the wrong codes and it was covered 100%!

That’s a check for over $1400!  We received it earlier this week.

Then out of the blue we get a statement in the mail today from hubby’s former company saying they direct deposited over $1600!

They gave him a bonus!

I guess it was because he had worked the entire year and so he was on record as being employed for last year’s bonus money.

I think they feel guilty about laying people off because they were known as a company that rarely, if ever, let anyone go!

Earlier this year they put $1125 into our HSA account!  That’s been paying for COBRA benefits…at least for a while.  They gave us a $40 gift card to Publix for Christmas.  And the severance pay at the end of last year/beginning of this year was very generous!

Yep…it’s guilt!

We’ll take more if they want to give it to us…LOL…it extends how long we can go without my husband working and makes us feel more comfortable!
