Flagler Organics–November 30, 2010

Since I’m a little behind this week, I’m going to just jump right into the wonderful organic fruits and vegetables I’ve received this week.  Sometimes pictures are all you need!

Green leaf lettuce, collards, broccoli crowns, yellow onion

Roma tomatoes, kiwi, bananas, Cameo apples, Atualfo mango, Ruby grapefruit

Yellow squash, bicolor corn, cucumber

Another wonderful fruit and veggie basket this week specifically geared towards Thanksgiving!  Of course, we don’t make a Thanksgiving meal in our house.  My parents do Thanksgiving and we do Christmas.  So I’ll have to find other uses for the wonderful food we got this week.

Romaine lettuce, green beans, cremini mushrooms, red seedless grapes

Don’t the mushrooms look wonderful!?!  The picture really doesn’t do them justice…I think I’m the most excited over them than any of the others.  I can’t wait to taste them!

Grape tomatoes, bananas, apples (they were an unexpected addition…not sure what kind they are, but the fruit basket they sell has Braeburn apples so perhaps that’s what these are), celery, parsley, white pearl onions

Hass avocado, sweet potato, Yukon gold potatoes, carnival squash, carrots, Robinson tangerines

Well, I thought I was getting fresh cranberries today, but apparently I’m not. :-(   When we picked up our basket yesterday, the cranberries were not in yet.  She asked what I’d like to do, pick them up later or have them delivered.  Before I could decide, she said they would deliver them today so I didn’t make any plans to pick them up.  But no cranberries delivered today… *sigh*  Either that or they are going to deliver them really, really late because they have a lot of deliveries to make today. I’ll add a picture, if they do, otherwise I’ll have to see what’s going on next week.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone tomorrow!

Another week of organic fruit and veggies.  I really like seeing what I’ve gotten each week!

My husband used the eggplant from last week and made a wonderful sauce to put over pasta!  It was so good!

The red chard from a couple weeks ago was trashed.  I could never figure out what to do with it and from what I heard I’m not the only one.  We were supposed to get some more this week and I was cringing over it.  Thankfully, the person that’s handling the orders for us let them know and they switched it out for celery, which I use a lot!

Here’s this week’s basket:

Red butter lettuce, celery, bok choy

Zucchini, beets, kiwi, granny smith apples, tomato, cucumber, broccoli, pineapple, bananas

Other than the beets, this is probably the basket I’m going to find the easiest to use, though it may take some time to figure out how to cut the pineapple.  I’m sure I’ll find a video showing me how online!

Fresh Fruit, Vegetables, and Other Errands

Today was the morning of errands and near misses!

It was all timed so perfectly that I made a small circle, then a loop in one area of town before coming home, which is when the thunderstorms started a short time later.  Our city is set up so that homes, schools, and churches are basically located in certain areas with stores and other businesses located in one strip of town and the Town Center.  It works out nicely when all the errands are located in the same area!  All of the places I needed to go to today were within 5 minutes or less driving time from each other (about 10-15 minutes to get to the first location).

This is how my morning went:

Drove to CVS to pick up prescription refill for hubby.  Not much happened to this point except I noticed someone left their keys on the pharmacy counter and they had to call over the intercom for her to come get them.

As we were heading for our next destination, a stupid woman (YES, I’m calling her stupid!) almost made us crash into her!  Our light was green and she drove right in front of us to go down a street that was one-way in the other direction!  Luckily, for all of us, I was able to stop and maneuver around her and there were no other cars around me at the time that could have slammed into me from behind when I had to stop.  She quickly realized her mistake because there were cars blocking her waiting for their light to turn green so she turned around in front of them and turned behind me.

This wasn’t some small road where it’s not easy to see the other roads either.  We’re talking four lanes with a fairly large median and turn lanes on the streets we came from with the street she was turning onto being three lanes!  All clearly marked! She had plenty of time to realize she was making a mistake and correct it, but didn’t seem to until she got to the cars blocking her way!

Yikes!

After that incident, where my youngest son pointed out I said “Cripes All Mighty” and my oldest thinking that was weird, we headed to Goodwill.  I dropped off four more boxes of stuff!  I dropped off three boxes earlier in the week.  I’m going to clear out that garage even if it takes me several more trips to Goodwill!

A quick trip to the dentist was next.  My 8-year-old had to get a separator put in between two of his teeth to get ready to have a spacer attached on Monday.  Oh joy! He did really well with the appointment.  I’m hoping the whole experience won’t be too bad for him.  After the spacer is done stretching everything out, then he’ll be getting braces on his top teeth only to fix a gap and underbite/overbite issues.  Unfortunately, he’ll need braces again when he’s a teenager to finish straightening his teeth.

Two minutes later we were at the post office to mail off a book I sold on Half.com.  The person working there was hilarious, joking around with all the customers.  He asked about the boys’ schools and we found out he’s the father of one of the teachers at the elementary school.

It was finally lunch time! A little early (about 11:15 am), but we didn’t have time this morning to eat breakfast plus we missed the lunch rush!  We stopped by Wendy’s and just relaxed for a bit.

The last stop was at Publix to pick up some fruit, vegetables, milk, eggs, and some good buy one, get one free deals.  I’m still not doing a full grocery shopping, but as mentioned in this post, I’ll be picking up fresh items and deals too good to pass up as needed.  I’m trying to eat more fruits and vegetables by having healthier foods on hand to snack on.  So I picked up some Georgia peaches, a few black plums, cherries, grapes, potatoes, lettuce, and pre-cut/peeled carrots.  YUM!

The cherry tomatoes are from my patio container garden.

Carrots, lettuce, cherries, and grapes!  The juice is gone…my youngest finished it off after this picture was taken.

The rain started about 40 minutes after we got home right after I got the mail from the mailbox.  Good timing!

Garden Update

The vegetable plants in my containers are really thriving despite having some issues with what I think are white flies.  So far they seem to be happy with the dirt and are for the most part leaving my plants alone.

Here of some pics I’ve taken today of the plants:

All of them together!

My radishes! I’m not really sure what’s going on with them.  It’s been 30 days, but they don’t look done.  Maybe I planted them too deep?  I tried digging one up a little but really couldn’t see much so I stopped because I didn’t want to disturb them too much.

The cherry tomatoes are growing nicely!

The beans are overflowing the container!  They look like they are getting to the point of producing some veggies!

Cucumber plants!

I think it’s time to cut and dry some of my dill, and the chives look to be usable now, too!

How is your garden doing?

Trying It Again…

I didn’t do too well with most of my seeds earlier in the year…mainly because the weather was all wacky!  So I’m trying it again!

But this time I’m going straight to growing them in containers on my screened in patio like I did in the past and had so much success with.

I’m starting out with radishes (1st time ever growing), cherry tomatoes (I’ve grown full-sized tomatoes in containers before), beans, and cucumbers.  I’ll be adding some others later…I need some more dirt first!

Container with dirt, radish seeds, cherry tomato seeds.

More dirt…plus cucumber and bean seeds.

This is what I did in May 2006!

It gave us just the right amount of fresh veggies for our family!

I’ve also pulled up the orange tree and replaced it with a Lantana.  The orange tree came up without a hitch…I didn’t even have to dig it out!

This is what the area looks like now:

When I get some more dirt, I’ll be filling up some more containers and planting more veggies.  Probably more cherry tomatoes and I’d like to get some green peppers again.

Are you growing any veggies?  What are they?
